On October 3, 2018 (Wed.), the "Mobile Suit Gundam series" received the "2018 Good Design Long Life Design Award."

This award recognizes "widely supported products and services provided for over 10 years" that support the lives of people both in the past and from now on, the standard to continue with the design strength. It doesn't merely celebrate "the long existence", rather it celebrates designs that are loved in real life, the continuation of the design without change, and honoring those who came up with the design.

This time, after rigorous review, the award was given to the "Mobile Suit Gundam series" that is a series of animation works beginning from the 1979 broadcast of "Mobile Suit Gundam".

"Mobile Suit Gundam" is about robots used as weapons called "mobile suits", and has realistic portrayals of war and complex science such has "space colonies". It is a complexly woven human drama, and not merely a robot anime with good vs evil, but created a huge boon with a new "real robot anime" genre.

Since then, new works have been created that reflect the historical dynamics of the times, a total of 20 television series, 16 theatrical films, 26 OVAs and other works have been created. The latest work "Mobile Suit Gundam NT (Narrative)" will be shown in 90 theaters nationwide from November 30, 2018 (Sat.)

Upon conferral, the judges remarked "Gundam is not simply an anime, but also a culture, if not its own civiliation?" Let's take a look.

Some people became real-life robot researchers because of their love for Gundam, and the series that began with first Gundam continues to generate reactions within various fields and culture. Various gunpla and material names have been created, with numerous words, concepts, and philosophies as well. Please continue to keep on evolving with the times.

During the 5 day period from October 31, 2018 (Wed.) through November 4, 2018 (Sun), the awards show exhibition "GOOD DESIGN EXHIBITION 2018" will be held in Tokyo Midtown. This show displays the winners from the "2018 Good Design Long Life Design Award", and will introduce and exhibit the latest award-winning designs, and is one of Japan's leading design events.
